An Introduction to Linked Open Data for Museums

David Henry, Missouri History Museum, USA, Jarred Moore, Missouri History Museum, USA

Linked Open Data (LOD) has been emerging as a new layer on top of the existing web that facilitates meaning (semantic) linkages of web resources. LOD has tremendous potential for museums. By publishing LOD, museums can meaningfully link their collections and data with the growing set of linked resources on the web, thereby adding value for those who use museum data for research and those who are finding new and innovative ways of using our data. But publishing Linked Open Data is not as easy as normal web publishing – there is a steep learning curve. The purpose of this workshop is to get you through much of that learning curve and to provide you with the information you will need to participate in the new world of Linked Open Data. This workshop is a – hopefully – gentle introduction for those who are new to Linked Open Data. It will be a mix of lecture and hands-on experimentation.
