MAGart 2.0 is a cross-platform smartphone/tablet app which was created under a grant from the Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) to utilize handheld technology to reinforce visual experience with collection objects for informal and school-based visitors while providing extended contextual information. The app was launched in May 2013 during the Memorial Art Gallery’s year-long centennial celebration.
An interdepartmental content team from the Gallery worked with Meridian Apps (now part of Aruba Networks) to develop the app, providing a variety of “voices” under a consistent structure. Pages for individual objects invite the visitor to look closely, while providing contextual information (Learn More, See More, Meet the Artist, etc.) for those who wish to go deeper. Audio and video (Listen, Watch) features are also included. A unique hotspot feature was developed specifically for the app to guide close looking at the collection objects.
Visitors can tour the grounds using the app, exploring the Gallery’s new Centennial Sculpture Park, looking for geo-caches, and listening to poems and stories built into the Poets Walk and Story Walk tours.
A work in progress, the app currently features 174 objects from the Gallery’s collection, information on temporary and long-term exhibitions, Look & Do visitor activities, and pages on the Gallery’s history and architecture.
