Art in the Clouds: Creating a Cloud-based Archival Repository for Museum Assets
Jane Alexander, The Cleveland Museum of Art, USA , Niki Krause, Cleveland Museum of Art, USA
Over the past decade, the Cleveland Museum of Art accumulated caches of vital digital assets and electronic institutional records spread over several departments, including 3800×3 sets of archival DVD-Rs of formal artwork and editorial photography, thousands of documentary images for in-house conservation on secondary network storage, and over 1000 folders of departmental- and project-related office documents.
In late 2012, the total amount of digital data designated for permanent retention by the museum’s institutional records retention policy topped 14 TB, with growth to 34 TB projected by 2018. This paper is a case study of the museum’s solution for the establishment of a long-term archival repository.
